Q: TCP/IP Model Lingo

 In 200-301 V1 Ch01: Intro to TCP/IP, CCENT-OLD, Q&A

Most CCNA candidates do not get all that excited about reviewing the TCP/IP or OSI models, but it never hurts to review the concepts and terms while practicing for the exam. Today I’ll ask a question that makes you think about the two different versions of the TCP/IP model, to help you review the names of the layers and which layers correlate to the others.

The Question

Consider the popular five-layer version of the TCP/IP model. Which layers from that model have a matching layer, with equivalent functions and identical names, when compared to the original RFC 1122 four-layer TCP/IP model?

A) Application

B) Transport

C) Network

D) Data Link

E) Physical

Answer Post in a Few Days!

I’ll post an answer post in a few days. Watch for it! It should be the next post in chronological order as well, so watch for the link at the bottom of this page (just above the comments section).

I’ll go with A,B,C and E

RFC 1122 from October 1989 identifies the four layers of the Internet Protocol Suite: Application Layer, Transport Layer, Internet Layer and Link Layer. While I have read that the terms “Internet Layer” and “Network Layer” are used interchangeably, I have also read that use the term “Network Layer” is incorrect as it is a carryover from the 7-layer OSI model; therefore, I would say that only the Application and Transport Layers remain the same between the 4 and 5 layer TCP/IP models

Sorry but what is the correct answer and why? I am very new to the networking world but I want to keep trying to get the CCNA before feb. Thank you.

The answers are, A, and, B.

Cristhopher

A, B are the only answers because C was originally called Internet and D and E comes from the Network Access or Link layer.

saugon

It’s B.
