EIGRP for IPv6 1

EIGRP for IPv6 – often called EIGRPv6 – has a nice clean configuration process. This lab asks you to follow that process, with a few small wrinkles. If you have the basics down, you should be able to work this lab on paper in just a few minutes. Read through the requirements, configure on paper, a simulator, VIRL, or real gear if you like, and I’ll post an answer post in a few days.


Configure EIGRP for IPv6 so that it chooses the best paths based on the expected speeds of each link. Figure 1 shows the expected speeds; note that in this case, all links run at 1 Gbps except for the R2-R3 link, which negotiates down to run at 100 Mbps. The lab begins with all of the interfaces shown in Figure 1 connected, working, and with IPv6 addresses configured.

Your job in this lab:

  • Use ASN 20
  • Set the bandwidth on all interfaces to match the speeds in the figure
  • Assume all interfaces in the figure are up and working when the lab begins
  • Assume all IPv6 neighbors in the figure are pingable when the lab begins
  • Configure a router-id using the x.x.x template, where x is the router number

Answer on Paper, or Maybe Test in Lab

Next, write your answer on paper. Or if you have some real gear or other tools, configure the lab using them.

For this lab, all you need are three routers in a triangle, with any types of interfaces. If you do not have routers with Gigabit interfaces, you can then set the bandwidth to 100,000 on one link, and 1,000,000 on the rest, to re-create the same routing design based on bandwidth. The main point is that all interfaces except the interfaces on one link have a higher bandwidth setting than the R2-R3 link.

For testing, once completed, all three routers should list all routes in the output of the show ipv6 route command. Also, R2’s route to 2333::/64 should refer to R1 as the next-hop router, and R3’s route to 2222::/64 should list R1 as the next hop router as well. The show ipv6 eigrp neighbors command should list two neighbors on each router.
