EIGRP and Bandwidth

EIGRP trades basic information about subnets, along with metric components, allowing routers to calculate the best route to each subnet. Those components include bandwidth and delay. In this lab, you will practice EIGRP configuration, while changing the bandwidth in one case to influence the routes chosen by EIGRP in a sample network.

Requirements

Configure EIGRP on all devices so that EIGRP chooses the best paths based on the expected speeds of each link. The figure shows the expected speeds. This lab begins with all the interfaces shown in Figure 1 working and with IPv4 addresses configured.

The specific rules for this lab are:

  • Use ASN 10
  • Set the bandwidth on all interfaces to match the speeds in the figure
  • Assume all interfaces in the figure are up and working
  • Assume all IPv4 addresses implied in the figure are configured, and neighbors are pingable
  • Use all defaults unless otherwise required to accomplish the lab requirements

Initial Configuration

While you might be able to configure EIGRP based on the information supplied so far, the initial configurations of the three router can also be helpful. Example 1, 2 and 3 show the beginning configuration state of R1, R2 and R3.

Do this Lab with Cisco’s CML (Formerly VIRL)

You can do these labs on paper and still get a lot out of the lab. As an extra help, we have added files for Cisco Modeling Lab – Personal (CML-P). CML-P replaces Cisco Virtual Internet Routing Lab (VIRL) software, in effect serving as VIRL Version 2.

Below, find two files: a file useful with CML-P and another useful with VIRL. (Note that the CML-P file has a .yaml filetype, while the older VIRL file has a VIRL filetype.) Once the file is loaded, CML-P or VIRL will create a lab topology similar to this lab’s topology, with the initial configuration shown in the lab as well.

Network and Host Device Info:

Handy Host Commands:

To see PC IP address: ifconfig eth1

Ping example: ping -c 4 10.1.1.1

Trace example: tracepath 10.1.1.1

To connect to another node within the topology: telnet 10.1.1.1
